Alex Thom

I’m a writer and award-winning mom. The awards had nothing to do with parenting, but it sure sounds good, doesn’t it? 😉

I work full time as the studio manager for a local graphic design firm, and I own Clippo.

Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.
We’re a happy little family of three — my daughter Story is 14, my son Mason is 11, and we’ve lived in Brooklin for just over 8 years now.

Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?
I’m grateful that I’ve always been able to write, and in addition to that, work other jobs that are dynamic and challenging. As a studio manager, I’m able to satiate my love of bossing people around, and as the owner of Clippo, I get to offer safe, work-from-home jobs to others, for fair wages AND support the charities and organizations we feel are so important.

Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in our community?
Within the Whitby boundaries, we love Pete’s Big Bite, and Harvest.

Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community?
I’ve lived in Durham Region since 1975, and in Brooklin since 2013.

Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community?
There isn’t a singular interesting person I’ve met here — the past 8 years have brought so many wonderful people into my life in so many ways.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?
To Newfoundland to see my parents, who we haven’t been able to hug since March 2020.

Q: What is one of your favorite movies? TV shows?
My favourite TV show was Schitt’s Creek. Movie? Maybe The Princess Bride.

Q: What advice would you give to people?
If you wouldn’t say it to your child or best friend, don’t say it about yourself.

Q: What is something on your bucket list?
To finally publish the book.

Q: What is your go to band when you cant decide what to listen to?
I never have the problem of not knowing what to listen to — music is life.

Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about our community?
It isn’t a business, but the markets… I really hope that the farmer’s market in Brooklin takes hold and stays again. It’s these markets that bring our community together.

Q: If you could choose anyone that is alive today and not a relative; with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would y’all meet for this lunch?
I’m an introvert… I’d really prefer not meeting for lunch, to be honest. 😉

Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?
I love that we have such easy access to the country from here, that we are able to get outside and feel removed from everything, and immersed in nature, whether that’s in the forest, or by the water.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?
My kids and I will move to a piece of land and have a hobby farm.

Q: (Even for friends or family), what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
I have been a blogger since before blogs were a thing… there’s nothing people don’t know about me. But perhaps it’s interesting that I was adopted, and tracked down my birth parents a few years ago?

Q: What is the most beautiful place you have ever been?
The Cabot Trail.

Q: Favorite month? favorite holiday? and best single day on the calendar?
July. Christmas. June 30.

Q: What would you rate a 10 out of 10?
Hammock naps on a 27 degree day with a slight breeze.

Q: Who inspires you to be better?
My kids

Q: What is one or two of your favorite smells?
Vanilla. Coffee.

Q: Finally, what 3 words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?
Comfort. Kids. Joy.
