Charles Hay

Hi, I’m Charles Hay. I grew up in Montreal and lived in Ottawa and Toronto before moving to Whitby (Williamsburg) in 2004. In 2016, my Step-Daughter and I started a local dog walking business called Walk With Gus; Gus being our family dog. When I am not walking dogs, or spending time together with family and friends, I enjoy cooking, Smoking/BBQ, getting out for a round of golf and working with my hands fabricating projects from scratch.

Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.
My wife Diane and I are empty nesters. I have no children of my own, but I’m a proud Step-Father to two amazing Daughters, and a Grandfather to an energetic little two year old Granddaughter.

Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?
I have had a bit of an eclectic career path, having worked in the Music Industry, in Retail Construction (Carpentry), and a start-up online retailer. I am presently self employed and co-owner of Walk With Gus dog walking service. Working for myself and spending my days outdoors in the company of some wonderful dogs is incredibly rewarding.

Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in our community?
KB Food, A Tavola Bistro, Chatterpaul’s Restaurant, Tuscan Wolf… sorry, I guess that’s more than a couple!

I have been living in Williamsburg since 2004 and working in the community since 2016. It’s great to be working where I live.

Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community?
I can’t narrow it down to a single person, everyone is interesting in their own right.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?
Tuscany. It’s somewhere both my wife and I have talked about wanting to visit.

Q: What is one of your favorite movies? TV shows?
Chef’s Table or any of the similar shows that highlight the life histories and culinary abilities of some of the World’s Top Chefs or that highlight unique cuisines around the world.

Q: What advice would you give to people?
Learn to trust your gut feelings and don’t second guess yourself.

Q: What is something on your bucket list?
I’d love to go to Scotland to play golf at St. Andrews Old Course (and others!) and tour the Malt Whisky Trail.

Q: What is your go to band when you cant decide what to listen to?
Too hard to nail this down to one band… it’s really mood dependent. Anything 80’s is a pretty safe bet though!

Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about our community?
Country Lane Golf Course. Many fond memories playing there with my buddies and the course I first broke 100.

Q: If you could choose anyone that is alive today and not a relative; with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would y’all meet for this lunch?
I tend to subscribe to the adage “Never meet your heroes…”
